Shortlisted for the Orange Prize this year, this dark and complex thriller brilliantly explores the edgy experience of being a black lawyer in Houston in the early 1980s.  As a reader, you spiral slowly into the ever tangling circles of corruption, past relationships and local politics, but it's not without eventual redemption.
